Every 4 years, the United States has the opportunity to host the World Jet
Boat Races and this year Idaho will be the location for the races!
A field of 40 boats are expected with racers from all over the world
including New Zealand, Mexico, Canada and the United States. The Races
will take place on 4 rivers:
The St. Joe: Near St. Maries, Idaho. Class I
rapids
The Snake River: Near Lewiston offers class I
& II rapids
The Clearwater River: Near Orofino offers class I
& II rapids
The Salmon River: Near Riggins, Idaho offers class
II & III rapids
How the races are run: Unlike most auto races, jet
boat's head up the constantly evolving track of river one at a time.
The rivers are just too narrow and dangerous for side by side racing.
Each race has a start point and end point and runs are between 8 and 47
miles. Racers compete for the fastest legs in each class and for the event.
Boats are ordered on the river according to their estimated speeds.
When racers reach the first destination they begin the next leg and run back
to the original starting location.
Where to watch: Most spectators find a good rapid or a particularly tricky section
of the river and watch, holler and hold their breath from shore (please
respect private property - there is plenty of public land along the rivers).
